Gigi Becali Receives a Response After Expressing Interest in Mamadou Thiam for FCSB

Gigi Becali’s efforts to bolster FCSB’s attack ahead of the winter transfer window have hit another roadblock, this time in the form of Universitatea Cluj’s standout forward, Mamadou Thiam.

The 29-year-old French striker of Senegalese descent has been in stellar form for U Cluj, catching the attention of Gigi Becali, who remains determined to strengthen his team’s offensive capabilities. Following failed attempts to secure Denis Alibec and Vladislav Blănuță, Becali turned his attention to Thiam. However, the response from U Cluj’s management makes it clear that the club has no intention of parting ways with their key players anytime soon.

Radu Constantea, U Cluj’s president, firmly shut down any speculation regarding a potential transfer. He emphasized the club’s ambition to maintain stability and their current momentum, both on and off the field. “Thiam still has a contract valid until the summer of 2026. U Cluj is experiencing a positive period, both financially and competitively. Our main objective is to secure a play-off position, so we won’t disrupt the squad by selling any key players—not to FCSB or to any other club,” Constantea explained.

The statement underscores U Cluj’s resolve to hold on to its core players as the team finds itself in one of its strongest campaigns in recent years. With the play-off firmly in sight, they are focused on maintaining their current form and pushing for further success in Romania’s Superliga. Selling Mamadou Thiam, who has been instrumental to their success, would significantly weaken their attacking options.

Thiam’s impact this season has been undeniable. He has notched five goals and four assists, proving to be a reliable and creative force in U Cluj’s forward line. His market value, estimated at €650,000 by Transfermarkt, further highlights his worth and the challenge of securing his signature during a crucial transfer window.

For Gigi Becali, this rejection is yet another stumbling block as he continues his search for an attacker capable of elevating FCSB’s offensive performance. While Becali has a history of persistence in the transfer market, the unwillingness of U Cluj to negotiate suggests that Thiam will remain out of his reach—at least for now.

As the winter transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen if Becali will pivot to other targets or double down in his pursuit of Thiam. For U Cluj, however, the message is clear: key players are staying put, and the focus is on achieving play-off success.
